Churches and Chapels of the Eden Valley
I suppose the purist might argue that the title here should be “Church Buildings and Chapels” because strictly speaking a church is its people rather than the structure in which they meet, but I’m sure we all know what we mean when we use the word in its usual way. For centuries the parish church was at the heart of village life and in many places it still is, The 18th and 19th century rise of non-conformist (i.e. non-Anglican) denominations, Methodists, Baptists, Independents and others, gave rise in turn to the building of further churches and chapels which remain today – some no longer used for worship but others continuing to house lively Christian communities.
